The Sayre community has worked hard to promote the substantial increase in capital improvements
and business growth which has occurred during the last nine years, 1990-99. These improvements
and construction spending reflect confidence in the community.

  1. In 1990 a total retention lagoon system was constructed with CDBG funds and revenue bonds. The strategic
    location of the lagoons has and will facilitate industrial development in that area.
  2. In 1992-93 a new $69,000 lighted softball/baseball field was constructed with Land and Water Conservation
    Funds from the Department of Interior. This facility is located in the 80 acre wooded Sayre Park.
  3. In 1993-95 a new 500,000-gallon aboveground water storage tank was erected to proved storage and better
    service for residents on the north side.
  4. The northeast sewer line was added in 1994 to service the Western Area Vo-Tech and to eliminate septic
    systems in the northeast quadrant of the City. This was accomplished through a $268,000 low interest loan
    and a $175,000 grant from the Farmers Home Administration.
  5. The $1.7 million Western Oklahoma Area Vocational Technical School provides a vocational and technical
    education to Sayre and Sweetwater School Districts. This 34,000 square foot facility is located on 10 acres
    and opened in 1995.
  6. The new 4,000 square foot Student Center building for the Sayre Campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State
    University was a needed and attractive addition to the City. The University has recently added a beautifully
    landscaped walking trail on the northwest corner of the campus.
  7. The $650,000 educational and fellowship hall addition to the United Methodist Church completed in 1994. This
    facility provides classrooms and space for various activities for youth and adults in the community.
  8. The Sayre School system added the Fine Arts Center in 1994 to provide classrooms for band and music
    students. The new or improved businesses would include the 3-bay Mr. Goodwrench Quick Lube at Draper Motor;
    J&K Route 66 Skating Rink; major renovation at the Sonic Drive-In; the Martin Funeral Home; a new building for
    the First National Bank on the north side of the city; and the new construction of Arrowhead Resources on the
    north side as well.
  9. A new 6,115 square foot Beckham County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation building was completed in
    1994. Located on NE US 66, it houses two other agencies; Soil Conservation and the rural Development.
  10. The Sayre Park has been improved with the planting of over 100 new trees. The development of a tree farm currently
    planted with over 800 seedlings of various species will provide an ongoing forestry program. Approximately 120
    trees have already been harvested and outplanted to schools, park and trees have already been harvested and
    outplanted to schools, park and museum properties. The improvements were made possible with grants of over
    $20,000 from the Department of Agriculture and Small Business Administration. Additional lighting, new playground equipment and renovations to the restrooms and showers have recently been completed through a $50,000 grant.
  11. The Shortgrass Museum has been landscaped through a grant. Curbing, driveways and memorial sidewalks are now completed through a Department of Transportation grant.
  12. The City is fortunate to have one of the three remaining landfills west of I-35. Many cities are now experiencing greatly increased fees for trash service. In order to keep and improve the City’s landfill, a $750,000 grant and a $250,000 loan
    was obtained from the Department of Commerce for improvements to the countywide trash system. Sayre and Elk City landfills are being improved along with equipment and services for Texola, Erick, Carter and the rural county areas.
  13. Through low-rate Rural Utility Service loans and REAP grants, the City has extended the water line to the correctional
    facility and added sewer lines and lagoon improvements.
  14. A REAP grant through Southwest Oklahoma Development Authority in 1998 provided $50,000 toward the cost of a
    new fire truck for the City.
  15. Water and sewer lines and a water storage tank are being added in the southern additions to the City to provide better services and future growth for both residential and economic development. These improvements are made possible
    through a CDBG grant and use of savings for capital improvements.
  16. The 1,440-bed North Fork Correctional Facility, one of the largest public or private prisons in the State, opened in
    January 1998. The $7.1 million payroll and $3.1 million expenditure budget is serving as a catalyst for economic
    development.
  17. Home rehabilitation and reconstruction from a $150,000 HOME partnership Program as well as private development
    of new housing and a quadplex rental unit have helped proved housing for new residents seeking employment in Sayre.
  18. Flying J Corporation has purchased land at I-40 and Highway 283 interchange and will begin construction of a large
    Travel Plaza and service facility for trucks and automobiles.  Opening is anticipated January 2001.
  19. As a newly designated 2000 Oklahoma Main Street Town, Sayre will receive technical and design assistance from the program staff of the Oklahoma Main Street Program. This is a comprehensive revitalization program that provides
    communities with the tools to improve their historic central and neighborhood business district area.   Grand Opening 
    will be March 13th, 2001 at 11:00am.
  20. The Aspen Ridge Apartment Complex, a 60-unit facility will provide affordable housing for Sayre employees that are 
    living in surrounding communities, for students, and others who prefer to live in Sayre.  
  21. Superior Trailer Services, Inc. have recently leased the existing 10,000 square foot building at the Sayre Industrial Park.  
    As an ODOT inspection sight for tankers these progressive business
    owners have success in their background and expansion in mind.

  25. A REAP Grant has recently been rewarded in the amount of $49,500 for the completion of sewer lines to the 34 
    acre Sayre Commercial Park on I-40 and State Highway 283.

  27. The National Historic Battlefield in Cheyenne has appropriated Federal funding of $4 million for a new tourist center.  
  28. A CDBG grant was awarded for $150,000 to replace existing sewer lines on Broadway.
  29. A large Centennial Celebration in September of 2001 resulted in a new annual festival re-named the following year as the Sayre Hoot ‘n Scoot.
  30. The 2001 launching of a new billboard and marketing campaign 
  31. The City of Sayre now has a public access channel for public service announcements, funeral notices, or storm warnings.  City Council meetings are played back on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm.
  32. Sayre Memorial Hospital expansion of a radiology addition including a C.T. Scanner and Ultra Sound room, total footage of 1,116 sq.
  33. Superior Lube, Inc. has purchased property at the Route 66 Business Park constructing a 2-bay truck lube; Grand Opening planned for March of 2003.
  34. AmericInn Hotel and Suites purchased property at the Route 66 Business Park for a $2.5 million lodging facility, Grand Opening mid-May 2003.
