CLIMATE
The average January Temperatures range between 35-47 degrees Fahrenheit with a July temperature average of 78 degrees. The area receives an average 23 inches of rainfall annually and 10 inches of snow. The yearly average for days is 343.
GENERAL GOVERNMENT
Sayre has an Aldermanic form of government. Sayre has a comprehensive city plan and zoning requirements. The city provides water, sewer, and garbage services to its residents.
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Sayre has three area-owned locally operated branch banks. Headquartered in Elk City and Hollis, these banking institutions have served the area since the early 1900's. Total assets of all three banks exceed $348,235,098.
INDUSTRIAL FINANCING
The Oklahoma Finance Authority (OFA) provides low interest financing through the
issuance of general obligation
bonds. The loans are established 300 basis points over cost. In a first mortgage position,
the loan can be up to
$1.25 million. The Beckham County Economic Development Authority also serves as a vehicle
to assist business
and industry locating in the county.
HOUSING
Sayre has 1507 dwellings with 70.2% owner occupancy. A new housing addition has
recently opened and continues
to expand to accommodate future growth. Lots are still available in this and other fully
developed housing additions.
A four-unit complex has been completed and a 60 unit apartment complex is in the planning
stages.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Sayre has 7 full-time police officers and 20 volunteer fire personnel. The city fire insurance classification is a 6 while adjacent areas have a 9 classification. Sayre is services 24 hours a day by Sinor Ambulance and the 911 Emergency Service is in operation.
MEDICAL FACILITIES & MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS
Sayres primary health care facility is the 46-bed Sayre Memorial Hospital. The City-owned hospital is leased to the hospital board. There are two nursing homes and a retirement center with over 168 beds. Practicing in the Sayre area are four family-practice physicians, two of whom handle obstetrics, a surgeon, two dentists, one chiropractor and one optometrist.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Sayre is serviced by Southwestern Bell Telephone and Dobson ATT fiber systems. Telecommunications information in Sayre is available through the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Sayre Campus and their fiber optic telecommunications center for education and instructional classroom purposes. Two local servers give Internet access without long distance charges. The Chamber of Commerce and University have developed an extensive web page for Sayre. Southwestern Bell installed DSL service in Oct. of 2003.
MEDIA
The Sayre Record and Beckham County Democrat is the weekly newspaper distributed each Tuesday. There is one cable TV channel, which provides local and area news 24 hours a day. A 100,000-watt FM radio station, KECO, is located 15 minutes from Sayre as well as an AM station.
COMMUNITY FACILITIES
Sayre has a banquet facility that will seat 300. The city has a Western Motel and a new AmericInn Lodge and Suites that opened September of 2003. The Old Hotel is a renovated Bed and Breakfast offering 7 rooms.
RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
The citizens of Sayre have access to a number of recreational facilities. These include an 80-acre City Park with a nine-hole golf course, four tennis courts, swimming pool, camping sites, miniature golf course and 125 RV spaces.
Other local attractions include a rodeo arena, bowling lanes, skating rink, and eight softball/baseball fields. Sayre is also the home of the Shortgrass Country Museum located in the old Rock Island Depot.
Just 22 miles to the north is the Battle of the Washita National Park along with the Black Kettle Museum both telling the story of the battle between General Custer and Chief Black Kettle. This area also has the Coyote Hills Guest Ranch featuring wagon rides, trail rides, chuck wagon cookouts, Indian teepees, with 20 bunkhouse rooms. The new Flying W Guest Ranch has a historic buffalo kill site, trail rides, chuck wagon cookouts, and much more entertainment in the works. See Area Recreation.
Lake Lugert and Foss Lake are only a 40-minute drive from Sayre for boating, skiing, and fishing enthusiasts.
